This building is at risk due to the unsuitability of the current tenant and the lack of maintence to keep the building in a good state of repair.
History
In 1909 it was deemed advisable by the town council to accept the very generous offer for municipal libraries from Andrew Carnegie an American millionaire. The first Carnegie Library Committee was formed and put together conditions and plans and presented them to Mr. Carnegie with satisfactory results. The grant was then received. A site on the east side of the Merchant Bank on Charles St. E. was purchased from the bank. The committee called for tenders for the building in June 1909. The tender from James E. Coulter of Woodstock was
accepted for $8,590.00. The building was started in the fall of 1909 and completed and transferred to the committee on May 28, 1910. The completed cost of the library, which included a heating plant, lighting and shelving, was $9,000.00. The library remained in this location until the new Town Centre and Library was built on the corner of King St. W. and Oxford St. It is now used by the Upper Deck Christian Youth Club.
